Rare Sefer of Maharal Tzintz Eulogy on the Noda B'Yehuda Vienna, 1793 * Hespeda Yikara Deshchivi — a heartfelt eulogy delivered by the brilliant gaon, Rabbi Aryeh Leib Tzintz, upon the passing of the great leader of the generation, Rabbi Yechezkel Landau of Prague, author of Noda B'Yehuda. At the time of the eulogy, the Maharal Tzintz was only twenty-five years old, and yet he had already merited to receive a remarkable approbation from the Noda B'Yehuda for his sefer Ya’alas Chen, which had been printed shortly before. In that approbation, the Noda B'Yehuda wrote that he had established a rule not to give haskamos to new sefarim, but: “Ada’ata dehai gavra rabba lo nadarti — I did not vow with this great man in mind; I went against my own will to fulfill his desire.” Out of this profound honor and gratitude, Rabbi Aryeh Leib Tzintz wrote: “More than anyone else, it is my duty to bring comfort to his soul.” An extremely rare sefer. To the best of Zaidy's knowledge, it has appeared at public auction only once (Judaica Jerusalem, 2014), and it is the present copy. The sefer is not found in the National Library of Israel. It is recorded in the Institute for Hebrew Bibliography based on the copy in the New York Public Library. The sefer was printed by the author’s student, Rabbi Pinchas Zelig of Wodzislaw, near Pintshov (the hometown of Rabbi Aryeh Leib Tzintz). An introduction by Rabbi Aryeh Leib appears at the beginning of the sefer. That same year, the author moved to Pressburg (as mentioned in the student’s introduction). In 1795 he served as Av Beis Din of Plotzk, and afterward in several other communities. In his final years he resided in Warsaw where his outstanding students became famous — the Chidushei HaRim of Gur, Rabbi Avraham of Tchechenov, and many others. Vienna, 1793. First and rare edition. Fine new binding. - - - - - - - - - - - - The Famous Segulah for Printing the Writings of the Maharal Tzintz Before his passing, in the presence of his students, the Maharal Tzintz gave a remarkable promise: “Whoever will help to print my sefarim, the author himself will be a melitz (advocate) for him.” This promise is even inscribed on his gravestone. This segulah became established as reliable both in chassidic and litvish communities, including by the Steipler and Rabbi Chaim Kreiswirth.
