Decorated Colorful Kesubah for the Marriage of Rabbi Shmuel Salant's Son. Jerusalem, 1853 * Kesubah for the marriage of the chassan, Rabbi Binyamin Beinush, son of the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Salant, legendary Rav of Jerusalem. On thick paper with colorful watercolor decorations. It is written in fine Rashi script. The witnesses signed on the kesubah are some of the finest and most distinguished men of Jerusalem of that era: 1] Rabbi Yosef Yoel Rivlin (1821-1866),   son of Rabbi Eliyahu Rivlin and grandson of Rabbi Hillel Rivlin (disciple of the Vilna Gaon). Rabbi Yosef Yoel was a scribe and Rosh Kollel in Jerusalem. A righteous and pious Jew, he was one of Rabbi Salant’s most trusted confidants, and Rabbi Shmuel held him in great esteem. 2] Rabbi Yitzchak Shatz of the Perushim Kehillah in Jerusalem . (Toldos Chachmei Yerushalayim Vol. 3 p. 259) Three years later, in 1856, an appendix was added to the kesubah and signed by Rabbi Avraham son of Rabbi Uri Shabsai Dayan , grandson of Rabbi Yosef Zundel Salant and brother-in-law of Rabbi Yosef Yoel mentioned above, and Rabbi Yosef son of Rabbi Avraham Binyamin Rivlin, one of the founders of the Va'ad HaKlali and Nachlas Shivah neighborhood in Jerusalem, outside of the Old City walls. The chassan, Rabbi Beinush Salant (1838-1900) , arrived in Jerusalem at the age of three, together with his parents. He married the daughter of Rabbi Yosef Yoze’l [Leon], who journeyed to Eretz Yisrael on the same boat that carried Rabbi Shmuel Salant and his family to the Holy Land. Rabbi Yosef Yozel numbered among the sages of Beis Medrash Menachem Tzion. He was the son of Rabbi Bentzion Leon, one of the founders of the Meah Shearim neighborhood. Rabbi Beinush Salant was one of the seven pioneers of the Nachlas Shivah neighborhood in Jerusalem and a close confidant of his grandfather. He was also one of the first dealers of esrogim in Eretz Yisrael.
