Special Handwritten and Autographed Letter of the Rebbe Rayatz of Lubavitch Blessing for a Shidduch Engagment Riga, 6 Teves 1928 * The Rebbe expresses his blessing regarding a shidduch proposal made for one of the recipient’s students, affirming that it is “appropriate.” He blesses: “May Hashem assist you in gashmiyus and ruchniyus, ” and signed in his handwriting: “Yosef Yitzchak.” Includes a rare handwritten addition by his secretary, Rabbi Yechezkel Feigin, including a rare reference to the Lubavitcher Rebbe's wedding! On the reverse side, there is a lengthy handwritten letter by the renowned secretary Rabbi Yechezkel Feigin, one of the closest aides to the Rebbe Rayatz, concerning a shidduch for the Rebbe Rayatz’s brother-in-law. In this added note, he references the Rebbe's father-in-law - Rabbi Avraham Schneerson, grandson of the Tzemach Tzedek - who “is here, he came from the wedding” — referring, of course, to the historic wedding of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, to Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka, the daughter of the Rebbe Rayatz, which had taken place just weeks earlier, on the 14th of Kislev in Warsaw. Later, he writes: “The wedding discourses and those of Yud-Tes Kislev will be printed soon.” It is uncommon to find a letter of the secretary written on the reverse of a letter from the Rebbe himself - typically, his letters were composed separately. It appears that this was written on the Rebbe’s letter due to the importance the Rebbe ascribed to the matter. The Rebbe Rayatz, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn (1880-1950) was the sixth Rebbe in the Chabad dynasty, which he led from 1920. He worked extensively to strengthen Yiddishkeit in Russia under Soviet rule, establishing a secret network of Talmud Torahs and yeshivas. He was arrested and sentenced to death, but was finally released. In 1940, he immigrated to the United States, where he continued building the great Chabad Chassidus. His son-in-law and successor is the Admor Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn, the seventh Rebbe in the Lubavitch dynasty. Riga, 6 Teves 1928.
