Chiddushei Torah in the Handwriting of Rabbi Avraham Shag, Av Beis Din of Kobersdorf, a Leading Talmid of the Chasam Sofer –  1840 * Six large pages containing chiddushim on the sugyos of Maseches Pesachim and Shavuos, in the handwriting of Rabbi Avraham Shag-Zwebner. Written at the top of the first page are the words: “Sugya of Ta’anu Chitim, in the summer of the year 1840.” Rabbi Avraham Shag-Zwebner (Freistadt 1801 – Jerusalem 1876) was a renowned gaon and a saintly tzaddik. Already in his youth, he began learning under the Chasam Sofer, who cherished him greatly and often spoke of his student’s righteousness and brilliance, to the point that he once declared before many in the beis medrash: “It is hard to find a talmid chacham as great as the Rav of Schottelsdorf” (as recorded in the eulogy of Rabbi Naftali Sofer in Gevul Bnei Naftali). Similarly, Rabbi Zalman Spitzer, the son-in-law of the Chasam Sofer, wrote in his eulogy: “It is known that he was one of the greatest talmidim of the Chasam Sofer, who granted him semichah fifty years earlier and admired and cherished him exceedingly.” Rabbi Avraham became the Rav and Av Beis Din of the city of Schottelsdorf and, from there, went to the community of Kobersdorf, where he became Rav and Av Beis Din. One of his greatest talmidim was Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, who remained attached to him throughout his life. When Rabbi Avraham moved to Jerusalem in 1873, his devoted talmid, Rabbi Sonnenfeld, followed him. Another talmid was Rabbi Meshulam Feish, Av Beis Din of Tosh.
