Chiddushim on Sugiyos of the Ksav Sofer, Handwritten by a Student. Pressburg, c. 1860s * A booklet of Torah chiddushim containing four lengthy sugiyos of the Ksav Sofer, Rabbi Avraham Binyamin Sofer, the illustrious son and successor of the Chasam Sofer. The booklet was written by one of the Ksav Sofer’s students while studying at the distinguished Pressburg yeshiva, the leading yeshiva in Hungary in those days! At the beginning of the booklet, there appears a sort of title page: “Chiddushei Torah of my revered master and teacher, the great and renowned gaon, wonder and glory of the generation… Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Sofer, may his light shine forever, Av Beis Din and Rosh Yeshiva of the holy community of Pressburg, and Nasi of the Holy Land. Son of the illustrious luminary, may his merit protect us, Rabbi Moshe Sofer, author of the sefer Chasam Sofer.” It is later noted that the booklet belongs to the outstanding young man, Rabbi Eliezer, son of Rabbi D. Piniawer from Nikolai. This page was written and signed by Rabbi Avraham Piniawer from Zandovitz. The main body of the booklet is written in a different handwriting from that of Rabbi Avraham Piniawer mentioned above. The booklet itself contains four lengthy sugiyos: The sugiya of hezek she'eino nikar – [7] pages The sugiya of nosein ta'am lifgam – [6] and a half pages The laws of nosein ta'am lifgam , briefly – [3] pages The sugiya of pogemes – [7] pages The sugiya of shayaros metzuyos – [8] and a half pages. The sugiya of pogemes was printed in the Ksav Sofer’s chiddushim on Kesubos (with an extended addition), and there the Ksav Sofer notes that he presented this sugiya in 1861. Several pages from the sugiya of h ezek she'eino nikar were printed in the sefer Ohr Shraga by Rabbi Shraga Fishman (who was brought to serve as maggid in Pressburg at the Ksav Sofer’s behest), and it is clear that their content stems from the Ksav Sofer himself. The sugiya of nosein ta'am lifgam and the laws of nosein ta'am lifgam were printed in the sefer Akeidas Yitzchak by a student of the Ksav Sofer (and there, too, they were published without indicating their connection to the Ksav Sofer). Pressburg, before 1872, which is the year of the Ksav Sofer's passing. Page Count: [35] written pages. Size : 25 cm. Condition : The booklet underwent artistic restoration; there are tears with defects at the edges of several leaves (with a slight loss of text), filled in with paper. Bound in a fine new binding.
