Rare Remnant of Jewish Life: A Remarkable Handwritten Advertisement for the Sale of Mehudar Matzos – Central/Eastern Europe, 19th Century * A large leaf (approximately 21 x 33.5 cm), bearing a handwritten notice by the merchant Kalman Tzvi Segal, announcing the sale of mehudar matzos. The advertisement is written in Hebrew interwoven with Yiddish, in the vernacular of Central and Eastern European Jewry. It details the special qualities of the matzos, for example, that they are shemurah (guarded from rain) and were not made on Shabbos Kodesh, but only “in the proper manner, fully kosher.” The words “matzos” and “kosher” are written in larger letters than the rest of the text. The notice served as a public advertisement, as evidenced by the hanging holes visible along its sides. A charming item providing a unique glimpse into Jewish communal life in the 19th century, a world that has long since vanished. In the 19th century, printing presses were increasingly used to produce public notices, reducing the need for handwritten advertisements.
