Miniature Sefer Tehillim Printed 452 Years Ago! Antwerp, 1574 * One hundred and fifty mizmorim of Sefer Tehillim by Dovid Melech Yisrael. Four additional leaves are bound at the end of the Tehillim containing “songs found elsewhere in Scripture, ” such as Shirat HaYam and Shirat Ha’azinu, as well as the first parshah of Krias Shema. An exceptionally fine and small volume, measuring only 10 x 4.5 cm! It was printed by Christoph Plantin, one of the greatest and most important printers of the sixteenth century, who operated a printing press in Antwerp that housed no fewer than twenty printing presses! His Hebrew typefaces were of outstanding quality, described as “among the most beautiful ever created, ” as noted in the introduction to the catalogue of an exhibition of Plantin’s books. It is of interest to note that Antwerp was the birthplace of the master printer Daniel Bomberg, and that Plantin even acquired some of Bomberg’s Hebrew type through collaboration with Bomberg’s nephews, using them to print a portion of his sefarim.
