Handwritten Halachic Responsum Regarding Holocaust Agunos by Harav Chizkiyahu Feivel Rosenberg, Av Beis Din of Debrecen. Debrecen, 1946 * Lengthy, halachic teshuva regarding Holocaust agunos whose husbands were taken to Auschwitz and sent to the left, victims of the Nazi roundups and deportations, and slaves in the labor camps. 1. “Regarding women whose husbands were taken between the years 1944-1945 to Auschwitz, following the enemy's decrees, where, based on Jewish accounts or eyewitnesses, they were sent to the left, where it is known that they were murdered in the gas chambers and then burned in the crematoria, sanctifying the Name of Hashem.” 2. “Regarding our Jewish brethren who were banished from the country under the orders of armed murderers who, without pitying the weak, shot them directly in the heart, brain, or stomach with their rifles.” 3. “Regarding our brothers who were slaves in labor camps under the wicked murderers who starved them of food and drink and left them repeatedly exposed beneath the open skies, weak and hungry in conditions of terrible winter frost between 1944-1945, in the camps of the enemy, may their names be blotted out, in Germany.” Harav Chizkiyahu Feivel Rosenberg (1895-1985) was the son of Harav Zev Wolf Rosenberg, Av Beis Din of Debrecen and author of Yad Yosef and Revid Hazahav. Harav Chizkiyahu succeeded his father as Rav of Debrecen. After surviving the Holocaust inferno, he returned to his native town before departing from Europe for the shores of America, where he became one of its illustrious rabbanim and Torah sages.
