Letter of Torah Thoughts from Rabbi Meir Dan Plotzky, author of Kli Chemdah – Warta, 1907 * At the beginning of the letter, Rabbi Plotzky mentions one of his sefarim that had not yet been completed in print, apparently referring to Kli Chemdah, volume III on Sefer Vayikrah. He then proceeds to write a brief pilpul concerning the authority of Chazal to alter the time of the reading of the megillah. He concludes with the words: “Your friend, who seeks the welfare of your exalted Torah with a desiring heart and soul, Meir Dan, son of R’ C. Y., may he live.’” Rabbi Meir Dan Plotzky (1867-1928) was renowned throughout the Torah world for his sefer Kli Chemdah, which was embraced by the Torah community. He was a prominent Polish rav and did much to better the lives of Polish Jewry. He assisted in the establishment of Agudas Yisrael. From a young age, he was an outstanding ilui, a disciple of the Avnei Nezer, and adhered closely to his way of learning. As a chassid, he was deeply attached to his rebbes, the Sfas Emes and the Imrei Emes. At this very period, the Kli Chemdah stood at the center of the storm surrounding the “forged Yerushalmi” that had been printed the previous year. At first, Rabbi Meir Dan believed that the Yerushalmi Kodshim was indeed authentic, and he printed a proof in his sefer supporting its originality. However, after a short time, he realized that the entire Yerushalmi was a massive fraud perpetrated by the publisher Friedlander. He then became one of the leading figures fighting against it, and many of the Gedolei Hador relied upon him to clarify the matter. Warta, 12 Tishrei 1907 .
