Teshuva on the Laws of Pesach and Other Matters by Rabbi Mordechai Winkler, Av Beis Din of Mad, Author of Levushei Mordechai – 1913 * A halachic teshuva addressing several sugyos: the blessing on one’s tallis prior to wrapping oneself in it; the parameters of the prohibition of chametz on Pesach — whether the prohibition applies specifically to purchasing chametz or actively causing it to become leavened, or whether even the mere act of leaving chametz in one’s possession is included; the removal of a tallis and its comparison to eating in a case where one knows that he will not be able to recite Birkas Hamazon, and more. The entire teshuva is in the handwriting and bears the signature of the gaon Rabbi Mordechai HaLevi Winkler, Av Beis Din of Mad, one of the leading poskim of his time. The teshuva was printed with numerous changes, additions, and omissions in the sefer Levushei Mordechai – Orach Chaim, third section, siman 3. The original text before us has likely never been published. In one passage not found in the printed version, the Levushei Mordechai refers to a chiddush regarding the inspection of tzitzis that the recipient cited in the name of his grandfather — namely, the Chasam Sofer — and he writes of it: “It is sweeter than honey.” The Levushei Mordechai, Rabbi Mordechai HaLevi Winkler (1845-1932) , was a pillar of Torah and halachah throughout Hungary and was regarded as the posek hador during the last two decades of his life. He studied Torah from three disciples of the Chasam Sofer, and all his rulings followed the customs of the Chasam Sofer. He stood at the helm of the Yeshivah Gedolah in Mád where he cultivated a generation of gedolei Torah, and his brilliant teshuvos were compiled into the 4-volume series Levushei Mordechai.
