Light and Joy for the Jews Historical Kuntres from the Visit of the Dutch Prince to the Ashkenazi Synagogue in Amsterdam 1768 * Booklet of songs of praise and the prayer “Ha’nosen Teshuah” in honor of Prince William V of Orange, commander of the armed forces of the Dutch Republic and a figure of great political power. The booklet was produced to commemorate the prince’s visit to the Ashkenazi synagogue in Amsterdam. He was accompanied by his wife, Princess Wilhelmina of Prussia, Princess of Orange. A remarkable historical item offering a fascinating glimpse into Jewish life in Amsterdam over 250 years ago. Contents of the booklet: A beautiful Hebrew hymn of eight stanzas, the prayer “Ha'nosen Teshuah LeMelachim” (“He who gives salvation to kings”), a chapter of Tehillim, a special prayer composed in honor of the Prince and Princess, and two additional chapters of Tehillim. The entire booklet was printed in Hebrew and Dutch, on facing pages. The title pages are adorned with royal emblems. Amsterdam 1768. Page Count: [15] leaves. Size : 19.5 cm. Condition : Good to fair. Stains, particularly on the first two leaves. Creases. Bound in its original soft cardboard binding with a decorative motif (slightly worn). On the cover, in Ashkenazi handwriting from the time of printing, is inscribed: “Prince and Princess in the Great Synagogue.” Provenance : William Gross Collection, Tel Aviv.
