“Blessing you with every good”: Letter from the Miracle-Worker Rabbi Nachum of Shadik and His Brother Rabbi Yaakov Yehuda Leib Levi to Sir Moses Montefiore. Jerusalem, 1859 * A letter bearing the handwritten signatures of the holy tzaddikim of Jerusalem, known as miracle-workers — Rabbi Nachum Shadiker, regarded among the elders of Jerusalem as one of the thirty-six hidden righteous of his generation, and his younger brother Rabbi Yaakov Yehuda Leib Levi, one of the founders of Kollel Polin. In the letter, the rabbanim express their gratitude to the righteous nobleman Sir Moses Montefiore for the receipt of urgently needed charitable funds during a time of great hardship, and they bless him: “May you be blessed from the ultimate Source of blessings, and may you merit to witness the rebuilding of Ariel, as is the prayer of your well-wishers who bless you with every good.” At the conclusion of the letter, the two tzaddikim affixed their signatures in their own handwriting: “Signed, Nachum son of our teacher Rabbi Avraham, z”l” “And signed, Yaakov Yehuda son of our teacher Rabbi Avraham Levi.” The Holy Brothers: The three holy brothers — Rabbi Nachum of Shadik, Rabbi Yaakov Yehuda Leib, and Rabbi Asher Lemel — shared a dream on the same night that they should emigrate to Eretz Yisrael, and indeed they fulfilled this vision – in 1845 they left Poland for the Holy Land. This remarkable joint aliyah became known among the inhabitants of the land as “the aliyah of the three holy brothers.” Rabbi Nachum of Shadik (1811–1866) , the most famous of the brothers, was regarded in Jerusalem as one of the thirty-six hidden tzaddikim of his generation. Known for his holiness and devout conduct, he would fast from Shabbos to Shabbos, and it was said that a heavenly angel would reveal itself to him to teach him the secrets of the Torah. His son was Rabbi David Baharan. Rabbi Yaakov Yehuda Leib Levi (1813–1889) , a prodigious scholar in both the revealed and hidden realms of Torah, served as Av Beis Din in Jerusalem for over forty years. He was one of the scholars of the kabbalistic yeshiva Beis El and lived his life according to the teachings of the Arizal. He was a leader of the Ashkenazi community in Jerusalem and a founder of Kollel Polin. Jerusalem, 1859. One page written by a scribe, with autograph signatures of the two brothers.
