Rare Sefer: Masorot, Singular Edition – Venice, 1607  * A commentary on the masorot written in the style of homiletic interpretation, by an unknown author. Masorot is an ancient list that lists all identical words found in the Tanach. Mefarshim and darshanim found allusions connecting these identical words through homiletic interpretation—and this is the content of the sefer—to find connections between these verses through drush. It was brought to print by Rabbi Yosef, son of Rabbi Shmuel ben Rey, and some believe that he himself is the author (see Otzar HaSefarim, Ben Yaakov, letter Mem, no. 1582). Rabbi Yosef ben Rey (d. 1607) was one of the sages of Salonika. During his journey to Tzfat, he passed through Venice, where he was appointed as a Rosh Yeshiva, and he passed away there shortly after the printing of this sefer. An interesting question regarding his funeral procession on the second day of Yom Tov in Chutz LaAretz was printed in Shu”t Devar Shmuel (Abuhav), chapter 56. Venice, 1607. Singular edition, never reprinted. Page Count: 20 leaves. Size : 20.5 cm. Condition : Stains, wear, and creasing at the corners. Thick antique paper binding (slightly worn), bound within a fine new leather binding. Signatures on the title page: “Yisrael David Cohen”; ”מאת ה' היתה זאת כי הגיע לחלקי, רפאל כהן פאוויאה”.
