Manuscript – Unpublished Work on Yoreh De’ah Hungary, circa 1860 * A manuscript consisting of approximately 185 written pages, containing a work on Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh De’ah. It is a concise presentation of the halachos, incorporating the opinions of the Rishonim and the Achronim. The work follows the order of the simanim and is arranged by topics, such as the laws of shechita, treifos, the prohibition of eating a limb from a living animal, salting of meat, ta’arovos, niddah, and more. At the end of some sections, there is a small subsection titled “Notes from Achronim, ” containing additional remarks on the respective topic. To the best of Zaidy’s knowledge, this work has never been published. The author was a student of Rabbi Yehuda Asad of Serdahely, one of the leading Torah authorities in Hungary, as indicated on leaf 70a: “A difficulty on Tosafos from my teacher, Mahari”a.” The manuscript came from the archive of the gaon Rabbi Pinchas Bichler, Av Beis Din of Maar (1801–1917) , who was also a student of Rabbi Yehuda Asad. There appears to be some similarity between the handwriting of this manuscript and that of a manuscript by Rabbi Pinchas preserved in the JTS Library in New York (Budapest, Hungary Ms. K 158). It is therefore possible that this manuscript was also copied by Rabbi Pinchas. It is possible that the copyist is not the original author. Throughout the manuscript there are many glosses, corrections, erasures, and various markings. Hungary, Serdahely? circa 1860. Page Count: 99 leaves, containing approximately 185 written pages. Size: 12×19 cm. Condition: Good, with minor wear on several leaves (on one leaf, slight damage to the bottom line of text). Fine new binding. On the flyleaf, there are biographical notes in Hungarian about Rabbi Pinchas Bichler, written in the handwriting of his son, Rabbi Dr. Sandor (Shimon) Bichler Hy”d of Budapest. Similar inscriptions appear in the above-mentioned manuscript of Rabbi Pinchas, as well as in two volumes of chiddushim by Rabbi Yonah Aryeh Leichter, Av Beis Din of Tzetze, which later came into Rabbi Pinchas’s library (see: Alei Zikaron 38, p. 57). Provenance: Winner’s Auction (2020). - - - - - - - - - - - Rabbi Pinchas Bichler Suditz (1801–1917) was a son of Rabbi Eliezer, a Dayan in Fielak, and grandson of Rabbi Yehoshua Falk Suditz Bichler, Av Beis Din of Setschin. He was a student of Rabbi Dovid Bichler, Rabbi Yehuda Asad, and the Ksav Sofer, and he received rabbinic ordination from them. In 1867, he was appointed Rav of the city of Fielak, and later served as Rav in Maar.
