From Radin to New York: Letter of Blessings from the Chofetz Chaim – “Blessing and Success in All Your Affairs” – Radin, 1924 * Autographed letter of Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan of Radin, author of Chofetz Chaim and Mishnah Brurah. The letter was sent to New York to his talmid, Rabbi Yosef Stern, who served as his right hand in America — both in distributing his sefarim and in raising funds to support the holy yeshiva in Radin. In the letter, the Chofetz Chaim confirms receipt of large sums for the yeshiva and for the printing of the sefer Chofetz Chaim, and he blesses him with the blessing of a Kohen: “May Hashem repay your good deed, and may your reward be complete from Hashem, in this world and the next. May Hashem be at your side to strengthen you further in acts of charity and kindness, and to uphold the Tree of Life, which is the holy Torah… May the merit of supporting the holy Torah stand in your favor, and may Hashem shower you with an abundance of life, peace, blessing, and success in all your affairs, and may you merit to see the salvation of Klal Yisrael and the uplifting of the banner of Torah…” At the conclusion of the letter, the Chofetz Chaim signed in his holy handwriting: “Yisrael Meir HaKohen.” At the end of the letter appears his personal seal: “Yisrael Meir HaKohen of Radin, author of the sefer Chofetz Chaim and Mishnah Brurah.” Rabbi Yisrael Meir HaKohen Kagan of Radin (1839-1933) , universally known as the Chofetz Chaim after his famous sefer, was “Rabban shel Yisrael” in every sense of the word. He was regarded as the most brilliant, humble, and pious of the Achronim, and there are few sages whose legacy impacts the conduct of the contemporary Torah world as much as the Chofetz Chaim, whose landmark sefarim, including Mishnah Brurah, Chofetz Chaim, and Shemiras Halashon, are studied universally. The Chofetz Chaim dedicated his heart and soul to promoting the value of supporting Torah, traveling often and frequently visiting cities, towns, and villages in Europe to advocate and arouse the public to donate to yeshivos and support Torah scholars. He likewise authored numerous pamphlets on this topic, expressing that “supporting Torah is the greatest of all mitzvos whose reward is eternal and infinite.” Radin, 1924. Rabbi Yosef Stern was one of the talmidim of the Chofetz Chaim in Radin, and emigrated to America with his rebbi's blessing (although the Chofetz Chaim typically did not allow those who asked him to travel there; see Yeshurun vol. 33, p. 376). He assisted the Chofetz Chaim in distributing his sefarim in America and sent tremendous sums for the support of the yeshiva and the printing of his sefarim.
