Mateh Ephraim by Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margolies – Shapira Brothers Press – Zhitomir, 1848 * Halachic rulings, laws, and customs for the forty holy days from Rosh Chodesh Elul until Shemini Atzeres, by the gaon Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margolies of Brody, author of Beis Ephraim. Mateh Efraim is the sefer yesod on the laws and customs of the Yamim Noraim. The book contains detailed instructions for customs spanning the month of Elul through the end of Succos, and is widely accepted by Ashkenazic communities – Litvish and Chassidic alike. It is regarded as the primary source of the laws and customs of the Yamim Noraim and Succos and is one of the main sources of the Mishnah Brurah on these halachos. Printed at the printing press of the brothers Rabbi Chanina Lipa, Rabbi Aryeh Leib, and Rabbi Yehoshua Heshel Shapira, grandsons of the Rav of Slavita. Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margolies (1761–1828) , author of Beis Ephraim and Mateh Ephraim, was blessed with Torah wisdom and wealth. He became well-known through his foundational works, which spread widely across Jewish communities. At his funeral, the Chasam Sofer described him as a “world luminary, ‘avi, avi rechev Yisrael u’parashav’ whose writings and teachings echo daily in our houses of study.” Zhitomir, 1848.
