Machzik Brachah by the Chida, First Edition – Livorno, 1785 * Sefer Machzik Brachah — halachic rulings and pilpulim on Shulchan Aruch, sections Orach Chaim and Yoreh De’ah, by Rabbeinu Chaim Yosef Dovid Azulai, the Chida. The sefer is a lengthy and important addition to his sefer Birkei Yosef, and anyone who studies Birkei Yosef must also study Machzik Brachah. The sefer Birkei Yosef, together with its supplements, is one of the important halacha sefarim written in the era of the Achronim, and its rulings were embraced by all of Klal Yisrael. Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margolies of Brody writes: “A holy man of G-d… the sage Chaim Yosef Dovid Azulai… illuminated the world with his wisdom, with his awe-inspiring and wondrous sefarim, though we have seen only a small portion of them … Through Birkei Yosef and Machzik Brachah , we have merited to delight in the richness and beauty of his teachings…” (in his approbation to the sefer Avodas Hakodesh, Zolkiew 1804).
