Machzorim for the Yamim Noraim and Shalosh Regalim – Nusach Sefard – Shapira Press – Zhitomir, 1865-1866 * Part I for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur [1865]. Part II for the Shalosh Regalim: Sukkos and Simchas Torah, Pesach and Shavuos [1866]. Two parts of machzorim from two different editions, complementing one another, with a commentary for the piyutim and yotzros printed alongside the sides of the pages, and their translation into Yiddish at the bottom of the pages. Printed by Rabbi Chanina Lipa and Rabbi Yehoshua Heschel Shapira — grandsons of the Rav of Slavita. The machzorim are Nusach Sefard. For example, in the Mussaf for Yom Kippur, there appears “Atah Konanta, ” recited according to Nusach Sefard, alongside “Amitz Koach” by Rabbi Klonimus, recited according to Nusach Ashkenaz. The words “Machzor” and “In Zhitomir” were printed in red ink. In Part II, in Tefillas Geshem and Tefillas HaTal, illustrations of the twelve constellations were printed (leaves 38-41, 58-60). “Every G-d-fearing person should make an effort to acquire sefarim from old printings, which were for the most part produced by G-d fearing Jews, and especially from the presses of Slavita and Zhitomir, the grandsons of the Rav of Koritz, who were great and holy printers” (Taharas HaKodesh by the Shomer Emunim, ch. 6). In total, two parts of a machzor in Nusach Sefard, from two different editions printed in Zhitomir: Part I: 1865. Page Count: 154 leaves. Rare; recorded in the Institute for Hebrew Bibliography from a photograph of the title page only. Not found in the National Library of Israel. Part II: 1866. Page Count: 136 leaves. Rare; recorded in the Institute for Hebrew Bibliography from the only copy held in the National Library of Israel, which is slightly incomplete. It is worth noting that the Institute for Hebrew Bibliography did not see neither Part II of the 1865 edition nor Part I of the 1866 edition. (In fact, it is known to us that they were indeed printed, but they are exceptionally rare.) Condition : Fair-good to good condition. Minor text loss on several leaves, repaired tears, and restored corners. Signs of use and old mildew stains, primarily at the bottoms of the leaves, in Part II. New leather bindings.
