Halachic Teshuva by Rabbi Itchele Ponevezher — Eight Pages in His Handwriting * Lengthy, 8-page handwritten halachic teshuvah regarding the laws of marriage by the renowned gaon Rabbi Itchele Ponevezher, one of the greatest disseminators of Torah in Lithuania. In his teshuva, Rav Itchele addresses several fundamental sugyos. Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchak Rabinowitz (1854-1919) , who was known as Rav Itchele Ponevezher, was one of the leading Torah sages in the golden age of Lithuanian yeshivos. He was a contemporary of the Chofetz Chaim and Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski. He studied under the Beis HaLevi of Brisk, and spent two years learning as chavrusah with Rabbi Chaim Soloveitchik. In 1889, he was summoned by the Alter of Slabodka to head the Slabodka Yeshivah, and it was Rav Itchele who cultivated its growth and expansion, ushering it into its golden era. Rav Itchele’s brilliant shiurim and chiddushei Torah left all who heard them awestruck, and over many years, he taught hundreds of talmidim who would ultimately spread the teachings of Slabokda throughout the world. In 1894, he succeeded the Aderes as Av Beis Din of Ponevezh, where he founded a small chaburah for outstanding talmidim. Rav Itchele Ponevezher very rarely wrote his many teshuvos and chiddushim, and among the thousands he delivered, only a few remain and were printed in Shu”t Zechor Yitzchak and Chiddushei Hagri”ir. The present manuscript is a first version (draft) of the teshuva printed in Zechor Yitzchak HaShalem , siman 14 (Jerusalem, 1990). There are slight variations. Page Count: 4 leaves (8 sides).
