Rare brochure! Guidelines of Yeshivah Chaverim Makshivim in Jerusalem, headed by the Kabbalist Rabbi Emanuel Chai Ricci. Livorno, 1742 * Rare brochure announcing the founding of Yeshivas Chaverim Makshivim in Jerusalem under the auspices of the esteemed kabbalist Rabbi Emanuel Chai Ricci, author of ‘Mishnas Chassidim’. The yeshivah was established by local philanthropists with the support of wealthy Jews from Livorno. During this period, Rabbi Emanuel Chai Ricci traveled to Livorno to print his sefarim, and the plan was for him to assume the position of Rosh Yeshivah immediately upon his return to Eretz Yisrael. However, on his journey from Modena to Bologna, in 1743, he was attacked by anti-Semitic marauders who murdered him after he refused to eat pork. Following his tragic demise, it was discovered among his writings an essay in which he attests that his soul was rooted in that of the Tanna Rabbi Yehuda ben Bava, who, fascinatingly, was one of the Asara Harugei Malchus who was also murdered al kiddush Hashem. The building originally designated for the yeshivah was ultimately used to house the Ohr Hachaim’s Yeshivah, as the Ohr Hachaim attests in a letter, “I was advised with the consent of officials to establish the [Beis] Medrash here in the courtyard of the wisest of all men, Harav Emanuel Chai Ricci, who had also prepared it as a [Beis] Medrash.” (Igros Eretz Yisrael p. 268). Outstandingly rare! Livorno, 1742. Page count: [2] leaves + [1] leaf with author’s emblem in the shape of a lion (whose source is ‘Aderes Eliyahu ’, which was printed at the same time).
