Handwritten Eulogy by Rabbi Yisrael Lipschitz, Av Beis Din of Danzig, Author of Tiferes Yisrael Danzig, 1849 * A eulogy delivered by the Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Lipschitz in the year 1849, written in his holy handwriting. It has never been published. The Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Lipschitz, Av Beis Din of Danzig, author of Tiferes Yisrael (1782–1860), was one of the greatest of the Achronim. He left an everlasting imprint with his monumental commentary Tiferes Yisrael on Mishnayos, which was accepted as one of the foundational commentaries on the Six Orders of Mishnah, alongside R’ Ovadiah of Bartenura and the Tosafos Yom Tov, and printed in most editions of the Mishnayos since its first appearance. See the introduction of his son to Tiferes Yisrael for a description of his wisdom and righteousness. Written in a mixture of Hebrew and German-Yiddish. Inscribed on the first leaf are the words: “Eulogy of Reb Yehoshua Weiss z”l … Sivan 1849.” At the head of each page is written: “בעהש״י געונמ״א” – an acronym for “B’ezras Hashem Yisbarach, Gal Einai Ve’Abita Niflaos MiTorasecha” – “with the help of Hashem, open my eyes that I may behold wonders from Your Torah.” The author was meticulous in editing all his writings, and one can see on the present leaves small pasted slips upon which he recorded the corrected wording.
