Laws of Shabbos: Zichru Toras Moshe by the Chayei Adam – Shapira Press – Zhitomir, 1847 * The sefer Zichru Toras Moshe, “containing all the laws of Shabbos with their precise details and practical applications.” It was written by the renowned gaon Rabbi Avraham Danzig, author of Chayei Adam, one of the leading Ashkenazic poskim of his time. This foundational sefer has been published in more than fifty editions. The Chayei Adam composed this sefer at a young age for the benefit of his young sons. Written in a clear, concise, and highly practical style, it made the often complex laws of Shabbos accessible to every Jew. At the beginning of the sefer, the author included a “General Introduction to All My Works, ” an inspiring preface filled with mussar and yiras Shamayim. It opens with a captivating parable spanning more than three pages. This edition was printed by the Shapira brothers — grandsons of the Rav of Slavita, Rabbi Moshe Shapira, son of Rabbi Pinchas of Koritz. Rabbi Avraham Danzig (1748–1820) is famed for his monumental works Chayei Adam and Chochmas Adam. Already during his lifetime, they achieved extraordinary popularity, were printed in hundreds of editions, and became classics in every Jewish home. His friend Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin wrote of him: “He has been helped from Above... his work Chayei Adam has been embraced throughout the Jewish world.” The Ponevezher Rav related that his teacher, the Chofetz Chaim, would affectionately describe a Jew whose entire life was conducted according to halacha as “a Chayei Adam Yid!” In his youth, Rabbi Danzig studied under the Noda B'Yehuda, and after his marriage, he settled in Vilna where he became close to the Vilna Gaon. The family connection later became even closer when his son married the Vilna Gaon's granddaughter. He passed away at the age of seventy-three — a year whose numerical value corresponds to the title of his most famous work, Chayei Adam. Zhitomir, 1847 Page Count: 38 leaves.
