Shu”t Givas Pinchas by the Baal Hafla'ah.  With Handwritten Glosses by Maharam Yaffe, Disciple of Rabbi Akiva Eiger. First Edition. Lemberg, 1837. * Givas Pinchas, comprising eighty-three halachic responsa by Rabbi Pinchas HaLevi Horowitz, author of Hafla'ah, Av Beis Din of Frankfurt am Main and brother of Rabbi Shmelke of Nikolsburg. The volume opens with the approbation of the Chasam Sofer, the author's illustrious disciple, and a beautiful approbation from Rabbi Yaakov Orenstein of Lvov, author of Yeshuos Yaakov, who encouraged the author's grandchildren to publish the sefer. In his approbation, the Yeshuos Yaakov writes of the author and his works: “People will seek his Torah, for he is like an angel of Hashem Tzevakos. Fortunate is the generation privileged to have such a man.” This is followed by an introduction by Rabbi Meir HaLevi Horowitz, Av Beis Din of Wartow and a great-grandson of the author, who describes his revered ancestor's writings and records that the manuscript reached him through Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margulies of Brody, who had previously published Panim Yafos on the Torah. A fine copy with exceptionally wide margins. Bound together with Givas Pinchas is a copy of Nesivos LaShabbos, also by the Hafla'ah, containing novellae on Shulchan Aruch, Even HaEzer. The title page is lacking. Both works are first editions printed in matching format. Throughout the  Nesivos LaShabbos appear numerous substantial manuscript glosses in the autograph hand of the gaon Rabbi Mordechai Michel Yaffe, author of Shu”t Mara”m Yaffe and one of the foremost disciples of Rabbi Akiva Eiger. A preliminary examination of the Otzar HaChochmah database suggests that these glosses have never been published. Rabbi Mordechai Michael Yaffe served as Av Beis Din of Schmilgel and, in his later years, as Rav of the renowned kloiz (beis medrash) in Hamburg. Born in Krotoszyn in 1803, he was descended from generations of Gedolei Yisrael and was an eighth-generation descendant of the Maharal of Prague. He studied for eight years in the yeshiva of Rabbi Akiva Eiger and was regarded as one of his greatest disciples. In 1849, he was appointed to the famous kloiz in Hamburg, where he devoted himself to learning and teaching Torah for more than fifteen years, until his passing in 1868. His published works include Beis Menachem (Krotoszyn, 1834), Shu”t Maram Yaffe (Hamburg, 1852), and glosses to Shu”t Maharam Ohr Zarua.
