“If only there were more people like you in Klal Yisrael!” – Remarkable Letter from Rabbi Elchonon Wasserman – Baranovich, 1935 * A complete handwritten and autographed letter by the illustrious gaon Rabbi Elchonon Wasserman, Rosh Yeshiva of Baranovich and the leading disciple of the Chofetz Chaim of Radin. Rabbi Elchonon sent this letter to Berlin, confirming the acceptance of a young man to his prestigious yeshiva: “If it is within your means to provide your son with all that he requires, he may come here.” Apparently, the recipient had previously written to Rabbi Elchonon regarding this matter but had not received a reply. He therefore sent a second letter, expressing concern that perhaps Rabbi Elchonon had taken offense at him for some reason. In response, Rabbi Elchonon writes with extraordinary warmth and sensitivity: “There was absolutely no offense taken on my part against Your Honor, Heaven forbid. Why should I be upset with you? Halevai (if only) there were more people like you in Klal Yisrael!” At the conclusion of the letter, he offers his blessing: “I bless you and all the members of your household with life, peace, and every good blessing. Elchonon Bunim Wasserman.” Rabbi Elchonon Wasserman Hy”d (1875–1941) , Rosh Yeshiva of Ohel Torah in Baranovich, was one of the greatest roshei yeshiva and disseminators of Torah in pre-war Lithuania.
