Talmud Bavli:  Horayos in Pocket Format – Amsterdam, 1727 * Maseches Horayos from the Talmud Bavli, with Rashi printed on the page. At the end appear the rare Tosfos (see below for details), together with the Maharsha's halachic chiddushim. This unique edition was printed in a notably compact format: every two leaves in this edition correspond to a single page of the standard Talmud layout. This Gemara was issued as an independent volume and not as part of a complete set of the Talmud. This is the first edition ever printed of Maseches Horayos in such a small format. It is also the first edition of Horayos to include the Maharsha. Until then, the Maharsha's commentary on the Talmud had been printed only as a separate work, without the text of the Gemara. It was first incorporated into the Gemara itself in a handful of individual masechtos printed in Amsterdam around the 1720s, like the present edition. Today, virtually every printed Gemara includes the Maharsha at the end of the maseches. The volume was printed by the dayan Rabbi Moshe Frankfurt of Amsterdam, author of Be'er Heitev on the Shulchan Aruch and other works. Amsterdam, 1727. Page Count: [28] leaves. Size: 18.8 cm. Condition: Overall good condition. Minor loss of text in the margins of the final four leaves. Minor restorations. Stains and paper repairs. Old binding with a newer spine. Bibliography: Ma’amar al Hadpasat HaTalmud, Jerusalem, 1952, p. 118.
