Family Letter with Torah Insights by Rabbi Avraham Yaakov Sofer Hy”d, Av Beis Din of Tet – 1900 * Handwritten and autographed letter on a postcard by Rabbi Avraham Yaakov Sofer, Av Beis Din of Tet, the eldest grandson of the Yalkut Eliezer, who was raised under his grandfather’s close guidance. In the first part of the letter, Rabbi Avraham Yaakov relates recent family news. He writes about his mother’s journey to Pressburg, describes the favorable circumstances of his uncle, Rabbi Yehudah, who is “devoted to Torah study and Avodas Hashem, and is greatly honored and held in high esteem, ” mentions another uncle, and concludes with the blessing: “May the Almighty grant only goodness and kindness forever. Amen, netzach, selah, va’ed.” He then writes several interesting Torah insights, including a discussion on the Ramban. To the best of Zaidy’s knowledge, this letter has never been published. Rabbi Avraham Yaakov Sofer Hy”d (1878–1944) was the eldest grandson of the Yalkut Eliezer. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by his distinguished grandfather, from whom he absorbed the greater part of his Torah knowledge and noble character. He later studied under the illustrious Rabbi Simcha Bunim Sofer, author of Shevet Sofer, in Pressburg. He was murdered in Auschwitz during the Holocaust. His Torah teachings were published in his son’s sefer Zichron Ephraim, appended to the complete edition of Mutzal Me’esh. He also authored the sefer Mishpachas Sofrim, documenting the history of his distinguished family and ancestors. Hallasch (where Rabbi Zusman Sofer served as Rav), 1900 .
