Extremely Rare: Beterem Boker – Selichos for the Month of Elul According to Kabbalah, Following the Sephardic Rite Izmir, 1764. Singular Edition. * Order of Selichos for the month of Elul according to the Sephardic custom, based on the teachings of the Arizal. Selections from the kabbalistic work Chemdas Yamim are printed at the foot of the pages. With the extensive commentary Boker LeAvraham by the kabbalist Rabbi Avraham Toviana of Algiers, author of the renowned kabbalistic siddur Chesed LeAvraham. Printed at the end of the volume are Seder Nezifah, Seder HaMalkos, and Seder Moda’a Rabba, together with their kabbalistic intentions (kavanos). A very rare kabbalistic prayer book, not seen at auction for many years. This copy appeared in the Judaica Jerusalem auction approximately twenty years ago, where it was noted: “To the best of our knowledge, this sefer has never before been offered at public auction, and this is the first time in twenty-five years that it has been seen publicly.” Singular edition, never reprinted. Pocket format: 14.6 cm. Rabbi Avraham Toviana, a dayan and kabbalist, was one of the sages of Algiers during the eighteenth century. He authored the well-known kabbalistic siddur Chesed LeAvraham (Izmir, 1764), Eshel Avraham on the reasons behind the mitzvos (Livorno, 1783), and other works. Izmir, 1764. Fine new leather binding. Provenance: Judaica Jerusalem Auction (2006). The year of printing does not appear on the title page. The approbation of the dayanim of Izmir is dated 1764. On this basis, the Institute for Hebrew Bibliography, the National Library of Israel, Winograd, Friedberg, and other bibliographical sources date the edition to 1764. Meir Benayahu, however, records the year as 1766 (Seder Zichron le-Harav Yitzchak Nissim, vol. VI, p. 251).
