“May You Attain the Highest Level of Perfection – Torah and Greatness Together” Letter of Chizuk to a Student by Rabbi Yoshe Buxbaum of Galanta * A long, beautiful, and moving letter, handwritten and signed by the renowned gaon Rabbi Yoshe Buxbaum Hy”d, one of the greatest roshei yeshivah in pre-war Hungary. In this heartfelt letter, Rabbi Yoshe encourages one of his students, who was then living far from the yeshivah in another city and struggling with the hardship of being away from his spiritual home. He opens with a warm blessing: “During the days of Chanukah, may Hashem bestow upon you light and joy, and may you merit to serve the Creator with tranquility and to study His Torah in peace and abundance...” He then writes: “I deeply share in your sorrow that you have not found a place of rest... But take comfort, you and your dear friends, for you are enduring hardship on behalf of Klal Yisrael, and through your suffering, you will undoubtedly help bring nearer the redemption of Israel, speedily in our days, Amen.” He continues by blessing his student: “May Hashem be at your side, helping you to serve Him with fear and love, to study His holy Torah with a sincere and open heart, and to attain the highest level of perfection — excelling both in Torah and in greatness. Amen.” Before concluding, Rabbi Yoshe once again offers words of encouragement to his student, seeking to kindle within him a passionate love of Hashem and devotion to His service: “I urge you to strengthen yourself and never lose heart. Believe with all your heart that every step a person takes is directed by Hashem, who places each individual exactly where he needs to be to fulfill his spiritual purpose. The key is to accept everything with love and to rejoice sincerely in serving the Creator. Give thanks to Hashem for setting us apart from those who have strayed from the true path, and for granting us the privilege of attaching ourselves to those who love and fear Him, drawing close to the righteous and learning from their example. Through their merit, may we too be worthy of Hashem teaching us His ways, granting us understanding of His Torah, and accepting our prayers with mercy. Through the merit of the Chanukah lights, may we soon emerge from darkness into light, go up to the Holy Land, and there sing Hashem’s praises with joy and gladness, speedily in our days. Amen.” He concludes: “These are the words of your teacher, who loves you dearly, who prays constantly on your behalf, and on behalf of all my students, and on behalf of the entire Jewish people — HaKatan Yoshe Buxbaum.” (The signature is slightly damaged.) A truly awe-inspiring letter, with every line reflecting both Rabbi Yoshe’s profound attachment to Hashem and his boundless love and concern for his students. Rabbi Yehoshua Buxbaum, Av Beis Din of Galanta (1874–1944), was a Hungarian Torah leader and tzaddik. He fought resolutely against the Enlightenment and was one of the greatest disseminators of Torah in the years preceding the Holocaust. His yeshivah in Galanta was one of the most prominent in Hungary and produced thousands of students. He studied under Rabbi Shmuel Rosenberg, author of Be’er Shmuel of Unsdorf. He studied Chassidus from Rabbi Yechezkel Shraga Halberstam of Shinova and from the Darchei Teshuvah of Munkacs, who also granted him semichah. His letters and Torah chiddushim were published in the sefer Ohr Pnei Yehoshua. A photograph of the present letter was published in the sefer Marbitzei Torah Me’olam HaChassidut by Rabbi A.
