From Telz to Boston: An Important Letter by Rabbi Eliezer Gordon, Rosh Yeshiva of Telz, to Strengthen Yiddishkeit in the United States – Telz, 1901 * A handwritten and autographed letter of approbation and support by the brilliant gaon Rabbi Eliezer Gordon of Telz, endorsing the publication of the sefer Minchas Yaakov by Rabbi Yaakov Zalman Friedman, one of the rabbanim of Boston. It is well known that the state of Yiddishkeit in the United States in those days was complex, and the words of Rabbi Eliezer in the present letter take on a special public significance as a call to strengthen Torah and mesorah: “From what I have seen, your drashos have the ability to speak directly to the heart, strengthening faith and inspiring a love of Torah. Even from the small sample I have seen, it is clear to me that your approach is firmly rooted in the sacred tradition of our forefathers, and that you possess a rare gift for drawing the hearts of both your listeners and the readers of your sefer closer to their Father in Heaven. May Hashem grant you success in bringing your worthy work, Minchas Yaakov, to publication.” He concludes with a heartfelt blessing for the author: “I conclude with a blessing that Hashem grant you success in bringing people closer to their Father in Heaven, to His Torah, and to the Jewish faith. May you be blessed with abundant success and blessing, both spiritually and materially. This is the blessing of one who appreciates all those who remain faithful to the traditions of our forefathers and dedicate themselves to guiding the Jewish people along the proper path… Telz, Eliezer Gorden.” The sefer Minchas Yaakov was indeed printed in New York that same year, with the present approbation printed at its beginning (see accompanying photograph). Rabbi Eliezer Gordon (1841-1910) was one of the great sages of his generation and one of the leading Roshei Yeshiva in Lithuania. A talmid of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter, he demonstrated exceptional talents from a young age. He was renowned for his sharp intellect, sound judgment, and profound understanding, coupled with a refined character, which he imparted to his students through his famous shiurim. Appointed Av Beis Din of Telz in 1881, he transformed the Telz Yeshiva into one of the most prestigious Torah institutions in the world. In 1910, he traveled to England to raise funds for the yeshiva but fell ill from great distress and was niftar there. His responsa was published in the sefer Teshuvos Rabbi Eliezer (see Tnu’at HaMussar, Vol. 2, pp. 347-354).  Telz, 1901.
