scarce! Essays of the Rebbe of Lubavitch [tha Rayatz] - "to learn in public" on the day of the Yartzheit of Admor Hazaken - Riga, 1940 (Holocaust period)

A very rare booklet printed during the Holocaust.

The National Library in Jerusalem does not have a copy of this booklet!

Historical background:

Upon arriving in Riga, in the year 1928, the Rayatz began vigorous activity for the Jews of Russia. In the first month of his arrival, the Rebbe convened a meeting of several rabbis and businessmen for the Jews of Russia. The meeting lasted several days. From Riga the Rebbe set out on his journeys to the Holy Land and the United States, these journeys were also part of the activities for the Jews of Russia. On his return to Riga he held a general assembly of Latvian rabbis to discuss improving the state of Judaism in the country. Over the years, the Rebbe also visited Chabad communities in Poland and Lithuania. At the beginning of 1932, he founded the "Tomchei Temimim" Yeshiva in Riga and brought from Lithuania Rabbi Mordechai Pogermanski, a student of the Telz Yeshiva, to head it. The yeshiva existes for only about a year.

After Latvia was annexed to the Soviet Union in the summer of 1940 and a communist regime was imposed, churches, yeshivas and jewish schools were closed in the city of Riga. Among other things, the Chabad yeshiva was also closed. Due to the complex political situation, there was no sanctions against Jews who observed mitzvot, but many Jews were exiled to Siberia, among them many Chabad Hasidim.

Following this, the Rayatz requested that the yeshiva students flee from Riga to the countries of India or China (both were under Japanese rule). Two groups crossed the border to Vilna, the capital of Lithuania, where they received visas for the countries of India and China from the Japanese ambassador. However, when they came out of Vilna, their train was hit by a direct shell, and most of them were killed.

רקע היסטורי:

עם הגיעו לריגה, בשנת תרפ"ח, התחיל הרבי הריי"ץ בפעילות עניפה למען יהודי רוסיה. בחודש הראשון להגעתו כינס הרבי אסיפה של כמה רבנים ועסקנים למען יהודי רוסיה האסיפה נמשכה כמה ימים. מריגה יצא הרבי למסעותיו לארץ הקודש ולארצות הברית, גם מסעות אלו היוו חלק מהפעילות למען יהודי רוסיה. בשובו לריגה ערך אספה כללית של רבני לטביה לדיון בשיפור מצב היהדות במדינה. במשך השנים ביקר הרבי גם בריכוזי חב"ד בפולין ובליטא. בתחילת תרצ"ב הקים ישיבת "תומכי תמימים" בריגה והביא מליטא את הרב מרדכי פוגרמנסקי, תלמיד ישיבת טלז לעמוד בראשה. הישיבה התקיימה כשנה בלבד.

לאחר שבקיץ ת"ש סופחה לטביה לברית המועצות והונהג בה משטר קומוניסטי, נסגרו בעיר ריגה בתי כנסיות, ישיבות וחדרים. בין השאר נסגרה גם ישיבת חב"ד. מפאת המצב הפוליטי המורכב לא התקיימה מלחמת חורמה כנגד יהודים שקיימו מצוות, אך יהודים רבים הוגלו לסיביר וביניהם חסידי חב"ד רבים.

בעקבות זאת ביקש אדמו"ר הריי"צ שהתמימים ימלטו מריגה למדינות הודו או סין (שתיהן היו נתונות תחת השלטון היפני). שתי קבוצות הבריחו את הגבול לוילנא בירת ליטא, שם קיבלו ויזה למדינות הודו סין מהשגריר היפני. אולם בבואם לצאת מוילנא, פגע ברכבת שלהם פגז ישיר, ורובם נהרגו.
