Sefer Torat Haim The Middle Rebbe's essays on Genesis based on the Alter Rebbe's short Ma'amarim

In the book before us, the middle rebbe explains, at great length and in great detail, the Hassidic Ma'amarim of his father, the Alter Rebbe, on the weekly parshiyot. A Ma'amar that was printed in "Torah Or" on one page, in the book before us it is spread over dozens of pages. Every Kabbalistic concept that was mentioned in the article of his father, the Alter Rebbe, is thoroughly explained in this book, with the introductions and background necessary for its understanding.

The Middle Rebbe was involved in the writing and printing of this sefer in the years 1824-1826, and he was the one who gave it the name "Torat Haim". His intention was to print the sefer on all five Humashim of the Torah (in his son Rabbi Menachem Nahum's preface to this edition it is said that the original manuscript indeed contained annotations on the entire Tora), but he managed to bring to print only a small part on Genesis.

In the year 1826, the first half of Genesis was printed in Kapost, on the Parshiyot Bereshit - Hayei Sara. In the year 1866, Rabbi Menachem Nahum, the son of the middle rebbe, decided to finish printing the sefer on the second half of Genesis, on the Parshiyot Toldot - Va'yekhi (Then the first part of the sefer was also printed again, the Parshiyot Bereshit - Hayei Sara).

In the interesting introduction to the book, the son of the middle rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Nahum, tells about the differences between the Ma'amarim of his elder, Ba'al Ha'Tanya, and the Ma'amarim of his father, the middle rebbe. In the continuation of the introduction, he describes his father's wonderous passing while reciting a Hasidic Ma'amar, and his request to him at the same time to print the book before us: "And he commanded me at that time to say, You see that the sun came out of its season [the middle rebbe past at the age of 54].. The sun that has set for me will rise when you become strong and a man, and publish this dear sefer... Torat Haim... My spirit will stir in my heart when I fulfill my vows that I vowed before G-d to my deceased Father when his spirit and soul will gather to him. And I know that G-d found My sins, and that all the troubles that ocurred to me, are from those thirty-six years that I did not keep the mitzvah of honoring ones Father...

ספר "תורת חיים" ופרשת כתיבתו והדפסתו:

בחיבור שלפנינו מסביר האדמו"ר האמצעי, באריכות גדולה וביסודיות, את מאמרי החסידות של אביו, האדמו"ר הזקן, על פרשיות השבוע. מאמר שבספר "תורה אור" נדפס על פני עמוד אחד, מתפרש בחיבור שלפנינו על פני עשרות עמודים. כל מושג קבלי שהוזכר בדרך אגב במאמר של אביו האדמו"ר הזקן, מתבאר ביסודיות בספר "תורת חיים", עם ההקדמות והרקע הנחוצים להבנתו.

בכתיבת החיבור ובהדפסתו עסק האדמו"ר האמצעי בשנים תקפ"ד-תקפ"ו, והוא אשר העניק לו את השם "תורת חיים". בדעתו היה להדפיס את החיבור על כל החמישה חומשי תורה (בהקדמת בנו רבי מנחם נחום למהדורה זו מסופר שכתב היד המקורי אכן הכיל ביאורים על כל החומש), אך הדבר לא עלה בידו והוא הספיק להביא לדפוס רק חלק קטן מהדרושים על חומש בראשית.

בשנת תקפ"ו נדפס בקאפוסט חציו הראשון של חומש בראשית, על פרשיות בראשית-חיי שרה. בשנת תרכ"ו התעורר רבי מנחם נחום, בן האדמו"ר האמצעי, לסיים את הדפסת החיבור על חציו השני של חומש בראשית, על פרשיות תולדות–ויחי (אז נדפס שוב גם החלק הראשון של החיבור, על פרשיות בראשית-חיי שרה).

בהקדמה המעניינת לספר, מספר בן האדמו"ר האמצעי, רבי מנחם נחום, על ההבדלים בין מאמרי זקנו בעל התניא למאמרי אביו האדמו"ר האמצעי. בהמשך ההקדמה הוא מתאר את הסתלקותו המופלאה של אביו תוך כדי אמירת מאמר חסידות, ואת בקשתו ממנו באותו מעמד להדפיס את הספר שלפנינו: "ואותי ציוה בעת ההיא לאמור, הנך רואה כי באה שמשי שלא בעונתה [האדמו"ר האמצעי הסתלק בגיל 54]... שמש ששקעה בעבורי תזרח כאשר תתחזק והיית לאיש, להוציא לאור ס' היקר... תורת חיים... רוחי תפעם בקרבי מתי אשלם את נדרי אשר נדרתי לפני ה' לאבא מארי ז"ל בעת רוחו ונשמתו אליו יאסוף. וידעתי כי אלקים מצא את עוני, וכי כל הרפתקאות דעדו עלי בנפשות רבות ר"ל הן מאותן שלשים ושש שנה שלא קיימתי מצות כ"א [כיבוד אב]...".

ווארשא, תרכ"ו [1866]. מהדורה ראשונה של חלק שני. יצא לאור ע"י רבי מנחם נחום בנו של האדמו"ר האמצעי. לכל חלק שער נפרד ובנוסף שער כללי עם אותיות בדיו אדומה.
