Julius (or Julius) and Ethel Rosenberg were a Jewish American couple, known as the ”Atomic Spies”. Arrested in 1950, they were convicted of espionage in 1951 for passing atomic secrets to the Soviet Union, and were executed on June 19, 1953. The question of whether the couple were spies remained open, in the eyes of many, for years. The couple's sons denied that they were spies. Only with the disclosure of the Venona papers, the opening of some Soviet archives, and the publication of the memoirs of former KGB agents who had been involved in the case, was it established beyond doubt that Julius Rosenberg had been engaged in espionage for the Soviet Union for years.
