Certificate of expulsion of Holocaust survivor Dora Neumann from the city of Sombor to the Auschwitz death camp – ”Death to Fascism, Freedom to the People!” – signatures of the survivors and leaders of the Jewish community of Sombor, 1950. An official document dated 1950, attesting that Dora Neumann of Sombor had been deported by the Nazis to Auschwitz and had survived the Holocaust. Signed by the chairman Mirkó Gutmann and the secretary Ladishi, and bearing the organization's seal, the document concludes with the words: ”Death to Fascism, Freedom to the People!” After the German occupation of Yugoslavia in April 1941, the city of Sombor was ceded to Hungary and the Nazis began persecuting the Jews of the region. Some members of the community joined the partisans. Later, the Jews of Sombor were deported to the death camps. After the war the city was included in Yugoslavia and after the breakup of Yugoslavia passed into Serbian hands. The Jewish community was almost completely destroyed and of the 2,000 Jews who lived there before the war, only about 200 returned to live in Sombor.
