A special collection of letters from students of the Mir Yeshiva, during their brief sojourn in Kobe, Japan - efforts to prepare a place of Torah for the Mir Yeshiva in Shanghai, China. Kobe, Japan, summer, 1941. Moving and special letters sent to the Yeshiva's friend in Shanghai, Reb Anshil Weinhoyz, a few weeks before the exile of the Yeshiva's students from Kobe, Japan, to Shanghai. Letters dripping with the dew of the past, feelings of Hod and Kedushah in anticipation of reaching a place of residence that would be their home for the study of Torah and the work of the days of Elul and Yamim Noraeim We will cite a few gems from the letter of the yeshiva student R' Yisrael Margalit: 'If Hashem wills, on the 22nd of this month the ship will sail for Shanghai with some thirty of our students and then the whole yeshiva will follow. And then we shall all have one fate, either the Messiah will come soon or we shall wait for some small mercies from Him. But all the alarms and the labors of man's hands will be stilled almost at once and we shall wait for the salvation of Hashem.' 'I am only in one thing - that you will now have much relief in the gathering of many Benei Torah and the Elul with our Mashgiach Shlita who knows how to deal with all situations, understanding them well.' All told, five letters: a letter from a talmid of Mir Yeshiva, R. Yisrael Margalit. A letter from a talmid of Mir Yeshiva, R. Markel Greenhut. A letter from a talmid of Kletzk Yeshiva, R. Avraham Kapnick. Another letter in Yiddish from a talmid of Mir Yeshiva, and a letter of greetings. The letters are written on postcards sent from Kobe, Japan, to Shanghai, China. Letters from the yeshiva talmidim during their brief sojourn in Cuba are exceedingly rare and precious! Background: At the beginning of World War II, most of the Yeshiva talmidim fled to the town of Kedainiai in Lithuania, from where they continued in the early year of 1941 to Kobe, Japan, following visas granted by the Japanese consul in Lithuania, Chiune Sugihara, a Chasid Aumot Haolam. In Kobe, Japan, where they had been staying for some nine months, the Japanese were finally convinced that the majority of the refugees, including the yeshiva students, had no chance of continuing to another country, and they deported them to Shanghai, China, which was under Japanese occupation, where a ghetto for Jews was established, known as the Shanghai Ghetto. Arriving in Japan, the Sabbath controversy in Japan arose, dealing with the question of when the Sabbaths and holidays fell in this country, which lies close to the International Date Line. Upon their passage to Shanghai, where there is no dispute, the problem resolved itself.
