This is a community that was almost entirely wiped out, with most sent to Auschwitz in 1944 – before us is documentation of the few survivors who returned, rebuilding life anew upon the ruins. Inside the ledger is a rare documentation of the funeral of the soap held to be made from the bodies of the martyrs, and its burial alongside Torah scrolls desecrated by the murderers. And yet we have not forgotten Your Name! The ledger provides a rare glimpse into the supreme effort to maintain a routine of Jewish life amidst the chaos. Towards the High Holy Days of the year 5706, no one remained in the community capable of serving as a cantor or ritual slaughterer, and the protocols document correspondence with the Sibiu community in an attempt to bring prayer leaders to the place in exchange for huge sums. Also towards the Passover holiday, we find documentation of the community's efforts required to maneuver with the authorities to obtain permits for flour for Matzot. Inside the ledger, we find lists of participants in community meetings, which constitute, in effect, a survivor census of those community members who survived and returned to their place.
