Especially rare: Collection of 'Der Kundes' supplements, Poland 1937 - chilling comic caricatures depicting with black humor the plight of Polish Jewry on the eve of the Holocaust. A collection of seven issues of the Yiddish satire and humor supplement 'Der Kundes', which was printed as a supplement to the 'Nayas Folksblat' newspaper. Warsaw, September-October 1937. Biting issues featuring fine satirical humor on the condition of Polish Jewry, offering a sober look and internal criticism regarding the divisions among the various factions within the Jewish communities. Through the satirical illustrations and poetic rhymes, the silent and heartbreaking cry of Polish Jewry emerges, moments before the destruction. A chilling testimony to poverty, cruel institutional discrimination, and rising antisemitism. In one of the caricatures, under the title 'Gelt Hot Er' (He Has Money), the illustrator expresses through a comic drawing the cruelty of the Polish establishment towards the Jewish community. In the illustration, a satiated municipal official guards the public budget sack, surrounded by representatives of Jewish charitable institutions, orphanages, hospitals, and old age homes, bowed and begging with outstretched hands. In another caricature titled 'Zayne Kvitlakh' (His Notes), the caricaturist illustrates the tragedy of the common Jew, literally buckling under the burden of existence. During the High Holy Days, instead of receiving ”kvitlakh” (notes) of blessing and life from heaven, the Jew collapses under a mountain of envelopes, debts, foreclosure threats, and execution orders. This is a painful reflection of an unbearable life of anxiety and hardship, where every day is an economic struggle for survival. Another illustration under the title 'Shlosha Ochazin' (Three Taking Hold) presents a harsh critique of the internally torn community. Representatives of the Zionists, Revisionists, and Agudath Israel are depicted tearing the fabric of the ”Jewish State” to shreds in an attempt to achieve absolute control over it, while European Jewry is desperate for a solution and a safe haven. In an issue that appeared ahead of the Sukkot holiday under the title 'Simchat Torah', there is a chilling satirical poem that constitutes a rare historical document. It describes the antisemitic reality on the streets of Poland, where Christian neighbors trample the Ten Commandments underfoot. The poem explicitly mentions the ”pickets” (antisemitic boycott guards) that suffocated the livelihood of Jewish merchants, the shattered shop windows, and ends with a desperate cry to heaven: ”Tatale (Daddy), put an end to this Sodom and Gomorrah already.” Especially rare issues.
