”Until today this man was unknown in the camp of Israel, for he assimilated with the people of the land in the manner of all the extreme enlightened Jews, and he knew not his people nor did he wish to know them” A biting journalistic article by Nahum Sokolow, expressing sharp criticism and profound skepticism regarding Herzl's first active endeavor, his visit to London to meet with the 'Maccabaeans' society for political action toward the founding of the Jewish State. Ha-Tzfira newspaper, July 8, 1896. In the article titled 'Wondrous rumors regarding 'The Jewish State' which Dr. Theodor Herzl conceived to create', Sokolow presents a review of Herzl's activities and the various responses praising and criticizing his vision and the distribution of his book The Jewish State, along with the risks involved. The review purports to be objective and even contains words of praise, but it is very difficult to miss Sokolow's sharp criticism. He does not spare his rod from Herzl, issuing harsh statements about his past alongside kind words about his 'return to his people'. Sokolow closes the article with great skepticism, offering an amazing glimpse into the dismissive attitude and skepticism Herzl received when presenting his vision at the time of his book's publication and the beginning of his work: ”And with all due respect to Dr. Herzl - for in one style or another there have already been awakeners and endeavorers, like Mr. Oliphant in his time and Friedmann who wanted to lead the Jews to the land of Midian and Loewenthal the first official of Baron Hirsch... We have brought all the aforementioned rumors and will also inform our readers in due time of all that happens in this matter, but we are not exempt from remarking that the matter is very strange and perplexing, for in these days of confusion in Turkey, the government there would hasten to make news by founding a colony... and we also do not know in which place in Syria Dr. Herzl intends to found the 'Jewish State' and all these texts still require interpretation.” An extraordinary issue constituting a fascinating testimony to the magnitude of the pretentious vision, which was then received with disdain and deep skepticism - that which seems to us today as self-evident. 2 leaves.
