Herzl - Nine Years Since His Passing - an extraordinary and unique memorial article by Nahum Sokolow, who at the beginning of Herzl's path challenged his activities, but later became his right-hand man and a vital, driving force in the Zionist enterprise - Ha-Tzfira newspaper, Warsaw, 20 Tammuz, 5671 | 1911 An issue of the Ha-Tzfira newspaper, dated 20 Tammuz, Herzl's memorial day - a seminal and extraordinary article by Nahum Sokolow, words of appreciation for the work and personality of Theodor Herzl, father of the Zionist movement, on the ninth anniversary of his passing. In the article, Sokolow describes in vivid colors and with his superb language Herzl's endeavors, based on what he witnessed while working alongside him at the Zionist congresses and in Zionist activities. Sokolow, who at the outset was highly skeptical and even criticized Herzl, writes here in an extraordinary manner profound words of appreciation for Herzl's persona. It is amazing how accurately Sokolow portrays how Herzl would be remembered by future generations, writing: ”Herzl's image for the nation and for future generations will be solely this: T h e G i a n t W i l l. The will in which the deepest aspirations of the Jews of his generation were concentrated, in which the strongest yearnings deepened and burned. The yearnings for the land of the parents, bursting outward with mighty force like a breaching sea, or a storm, or a volcano. With a natural might, tremendous and awesome in its glory. And there was a man who revealed and bore this will outward with spectacular pride and aristocratic splendor, until this beauty elevated itself above all its surroundings.” In the final part of the article, Sokolow writes candidly: ”And every time I saw this face, and every time I heard these words, a protesting and nagging thought fluttered in my mind: why did we not found this Zionism” and then explains what, in his perception, stems from the gap between men of vision and men of action. An illuminating and extraordinary article! Good condition. Light tears. Light age-related blemishes.
