The Beginnings of the Jewish Defense Force: Rare documentation of the victims of the Jewish 'Self-Defense' in Russia, and a call for the establishment of an internal defense force for Russian Jewry - Hanukkah issue of the newspaper 'Die Welt' - Vienna, December, 1905 The Hanukkah issue of the Zionist movement's organ 'Die Welt', opening with an editorial calling to establish self-defense systems for Russian Jewry against pogroms, praising the self-defense fighters who were killed in the Odessa pogroms two months prior, and crowning them with the title 'the army of the Jewish state in Europe'. Following the title page is a rare and difficult photograph to view, presenting the fallen fighters of the Jewish 'Self-Defense' (Selbstwehr) in Odessa. In the picture, the bodies of the fighters are seen wrapped in tallitot (prayer shawls) and laid on the ground in the courtyard of the Jewish hospital, surrounded by a crowd of mourners. An early and rare item from the beginnings of internal Jewish organization to establish the Hebrew defense force. Good condition.
