The Jewish Autonomous Oblast in the Russian Far East Birobidzhan - an extensive review of the Jews of the oblast accompanied by rare photographs - Buenos Aires, 1936 Nayerd, official organ of the organization of the Society for Jewish Settlement in the Jewish Autonomous Oblast in the Russian Far East Birobidzhan. Rare issues including a review of life and agricultural settlement in the area, accompanied by rare photographs. In one of the issues, a caricature on the cover presents a mirror image of the terrible situation in antisemitic Europe and a call for Jews to come settle in Birobidzhan as a solution to the Jewish problem. The Jewish Autonomous Oblast in Birobidzhan was established in the 1930s as a Soviet-Jewish national territory that would serve as a counterweight to Zionism. The idea to establish it in Ukraine or Crimea was shelved due to fear of antisemitism, and Stalin chose a remote area also to distance the Jews from centers of power. Jewish activity: Despite the harsh climate, the settlers managed to develop a rich culture there. They established settlements with Hebrew names, named streets after Yiddish writers, and published a newspaper in Yiddish (”Birobidzhaner Shtern”). Most engaged in clerical work and crafts, and only a minority in agriculture. The original plan aimed to settle 100,000 families, but in practice, in 1939, only about 20,000 Jews lived in the area. The peak was recorded after World War II, when Jews constituted about a third of the population. The flourishing lasted only a short time. Already in the mid-1930s, and again in the early 1950s, Stalin eliminated the leadership and Jewish culture in the region. With the fall of the Soviet Union, most residents emigrated, and today slightly more than 800 Jews live in the oblast. 5 issues. 52 pages per issue. Yiddish. Rare photographs! Good condition.
