A collection of over 15 issues of the Jüdische Presse newspaper, the organ of Agudath Israel circles in Austria and Czechoslovakia, headlines dealing with the concern of Austrian Jewry, among them an extraordinary issue from the day before the referendum on Austria's unity or its annexation to Germany - the referendum that was ultimately not held following the ”Anschluss”, Germany's invasion and occupation of Austria. Most of the issues before us deal with the question of antisemitism, headlines about antisemitism in Poland, the murders, and the initiative discussed by the Polish government to exile Polish Jewry to the island of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Concerned reports regarding the spread of Nazism in Austria, while expressing hope and clinging to the chancellor's firm stance to maintain Austria's independence in the face of this threat. In the issues before us is a compilation of issues from the weeks preceding the referendum that was expected to be held among the residents of Austria on the question of annexation to Germany; in the reports we are exposed to the deep concern of Austrian Jewry regarding what is to come, and their hope that Austria will remain independent. Which ultimately did not happen, and the German army invaded Austria on the day the referendum was supposed to take place.
