With their move to Shanghai in China, regarding which there are no differences of opinion, the problem was solved automatically. מכתב מיוחד מאת תלמיד ישיבת מיר, בזמן שהותם הקצרה בקובה שביפן - השתדלות למען בני הישיבה ערב גלותם לשנחאי שבסין. ד' סיון, תש”א | 30/5/1941 גלויה נדירה מאת ר' מרקל גרינהויז, תלמיד ישיבת מיר. מכתב ששלח אל ידיד הישבה בשנחאי שבועות אחדים לפני גלות בני הישיבה מקובה שביפן אל שנחאי. בדבריו הוא משתדל למנען בני הישיבה ומבקש את פעילותו למען בני הישיבה אף על חשבון קביעות עיתים לתורה מאחר ואפילו ספק פיקוח נפש דוחה כל התורה כולה. מתוך תעצומות נפשו כותב ר' מרקל שמה שמבקש סידור לבני הישיבה אינו מה שקוראים תמיד סידור, אלא אפשרות מינמלית לשהות בלבד, ואפשרות ללמוד ולהרביץ תורה במזרח הרחוק! מכתבים מבני הישיבה בזמן שהותם הקצרה בקובה הינם נדירים ויקרי המציאות ביותר בתחילת מלחמת העולם ברחו רוב תלמידי השיבה אל העיירה קידן שבליטא, משם המשיכו בתחילת שנת תש”א אל קובה שביפן בעקבות אשרות כניסה שנתן להם חילק הקונסול היפני בליטא, חסיד אומות העולם צ'יאונה סוגיהארה. בקובה שביפן שם שהו כתשעה חדשים עד שהיפנים נוכחו לראות כי למרבית הפליטים וביניהם בני הישיבה אין סיכוי להמשיך למדינה אחרת, והם הגלו אותם לשאנגחאי הסינית, שהייתה תחת כיבוש יפני, ובה הוקם גטו ליהודים שכונה ”גטו שאנגחאי”. בהגיעם ליפן, התעורר פולמוס השבת ביפן, העוסק בשאלה מתי חלים שבתות ומועדים בארץ זו, השוכנת בסמוך לקו התאריך הבינלאומי. עם מעברם לשאנגחאי שבסין, שביחס אליה אין חילוקי דעות, נפתרה הבעיה מאליה.
