Miniature Walnut Blanket Chest - Miniature walnut blanket chest, dovetailed, circa early 19th century, featuring an inlaid star to top. Square nailed, dovetailed case. Mid-Atlantic. Trestle feet. A fine example with historical records intact from the estate purchased from. Reserve. Measures 11.5 x 7.5 x 7.5 inches.Provenance: A lifetime Madison, Wisconsin collection. The box was purchased in the 1960s or 1970s by the consignors from a Madison Estate. Included with the box at that time were several records including estate lists from several individuals spanning from the 1860s to the 1950s. Estate lists include the following: The Estate of Robert Bacon dated 1861, Copy of the Inventory and Appraisal of the Estate of Eugene Hill of Conway NH, a newspaper clipping outlining the will of George Washington Gay of Sharon, Norfolk, Mass, dated 1892, a single page inventory of Eunice L Gay dated 1892, and most importantly a 5 page inventory outlining specifics and items from the Madison estate, presumably where the box was purchased. The other of this document is unknown, however, the last page is initialed EPV. 7-30/53. Most notably, on the last page of the 5 page document reads the following, ”The Daniel Webster Chest...There is on the top, a Waterford liquor bottle also once the property of Daniel Webster, and I have also a liquor bottle, and his little box he used on his desk in the U.S. Senate.”While no direct connection has been made connecting these documents and people together, the document suggests a possible connection to Daniel Webster.This has not been authenticated, nor can be taken as fact, but rather should be noted in the event the successful bidder wishes to further the research on this box.
