Late 19th Century Haudenosaunee Style Beaded Velvet Star Pincushion - This object is a three-dimensional six-pointed star-shaped pincushion, often referred to as a ”whimsy, ” created in the style of Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) souvenir beadwork. The piece is constructed from multiple stuffed velvet panels in alternating colors of orange, black, olive green, and mustard yellow. The seams and edges are decorated with rows of clear and metallic glass seed beads. Each velvet panel features a centrally located, raised beadwork motif depicting stylized floral or geometric patterns. The points of the star are finished with stacked glass beads in translucent green, clear, and opaque white, with several points further adorned with pendant loops of turquoise-colored seed beads. This type of decorative beadwork was traditionally produced for the souvenir trade in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. No maker's marks or signatures are visible on the piece.
