Large Patinated Bronze Sculpture of Flying Mercury after Giambologna - This large bronze sculpture is a late 19th or early 20th-century casting after the renowned Renaissance model by Giambologna. The messenger god, Mercury (Hermes), is captured in mid-flight, balanced on a gust of wind emanating from the mouth of Zephyr. He is depicted wearing a winged petasos and winged talaria. This specific version features the figure holding a fluted torch-like finial in his raised right hand. The figure stands atop a globe incised with a geographic grid of latitude and longitude lines, which is supported by a flared circular base featuring stylized scrolling cloud and wave decorations. The sculpture is finished in a dark brown patina. No foundry marks, artist signatures, or edition numbers are visible on the casting.
