Hand-Carved Anthracite Coal Mantel Clock, Nanticoke, Pennsylvania - This regional folk art mantel clock is constructed from hand-carved and polished anthracite coal, exhibiting a high-gloss, jet-black finish. The structure features a central circular housing with a carved rope-style border containing the clock movement. The central unit is flanked by two conical finials set upon a stepped rectangular base. An incised banner-style cartouche on the front of the base contains the inscription NANTICOKE. The clock face is white with black Arabic numerals and includes a sub-seconds dial at the 6 o'clock position. The dial is marked Ingraham in script and THE E. INGRAHAM CO. BRISTOL, CONN. U.S.A. along the lower edge. The reverse shows a brass-toned metal housing with winding keys and adjustment knobs for the mechanical movement. This piece originates from the coal mining regions of Pennsylvania, specifically associated with the city of Nanticoke in Luzerne County, and dates to the circa 1920s to 1940s period.
