Bidspirit auction | A 19th Century South Indian
A 19th Century South Indian Carved Wood Temple Pulley - This hand-carved hardwood temple pulley originates from South India. The object features a central rotating wheel decorated with a deeply carved six-petaled lotus flower, framed by concentric circular moldings. The outer perimeter of the frame displays a repeating chevron or stylized rope-twist pattern. The upper section is an integral carved hanger depicting a stylized face, possibly a Kirttimukha, surmounted by a tiered, pointed finial resembling a shikhara. A suspension hole is drilled through the top of this finial. The side profile reveals a deep groove for a cord or rope and a central wooden axle. The wood exhibits a rich, dark brown patina.
