A leaf of Torah Novellae on the laws of interest handwritten by Rabbi Mordechai Benet, Av Beit Din of Nikolsburg and the state.
Rabbi Mordechai Benet (1750-1829) was known for his divine spirit and righteousness. He was one of the most prominent Ahcronim and a most important Posek. He served as the rabbi of Nikolsburg and since 1790, as the rabbi of all Moravia. He was also head of yeshiva there. He was also known for his amazing diligence in the study of the Torah. He was greatly admired by thousands of Jews.
He was the disciple of the "Nodah Bi'Yehuda" and Rabbi Shmelke of Nikolsburg.
The Chatam Sofer (who was ordained by him in 1794 when he was accepted as the rabbi of Dreznitz which was part of Moravia) eulogized him: "… it is a bitter day to eulogize a Tzaddik, an outstanding rabbi of the generation who led his state for forty years … the only child of Shchinta Kadisha".
According to a Hassidic tradition, from a young age he used to fast, so much so that Rabbi Zusha of Anipoli reprimanded him for abstaining so totally from physical pleasures. After his death, sacks that he used to wear under his clothes in order to practice self-denial were found among his possessions and many wanted to buy them as a Segulah.
His books: "Be'ur Mordechai", Parashat Mordechai Responsa, Har Ha'Mor Responsa, Chidushei Mahram Mordechai, Tchelet Mordechai – sermons and Machshevet Mordechai on the Torah.
Condition: Fair. Leaves with omissions which have been professionally restored. One leaf is almost completely lacking and another has tears with omission.
