ANNO Leilões - Carlos Carvalho Dias (Viana do Castelo, 1929 - Porto, 2024) was an influential architect, recognised by his peers for his great love of books and for a remarkable career in architecture and urban planning. His participation, still as an intern, in the celebrated "Inquérito à Arquitectura Regional Portuguesa" (Survey on Portuguese Regional Architecture), conducted in the region of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro—a seminal work for contemporary Portuguese architecture—resulted, among many other outcomes, in the book "Arquitectura Popular em Portugal" (1961), and later in "Memórias de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro: nos 55 anos do “Inquérito à Arquitectura Regional Portuguesa" (Memories of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro: on the 55th Anniversary of the “Survey on Portuguese Regional Architecture” (2010), which he himself authored. Later in his career, he developed work of great significance as an urban planner in northern Portugal and in Macau, where he also served in the Government. His passion for reading and his profound knowledge of culture and History are not unrelated to the fact that he was one of the main figures responsible for the inscription of Macau and of Porto’s Historic Centre on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. From his vast library, ANNO has selected the works listed in this catalogue. Many of the volumes bear the ex-libris that Arch. Carlos Carvalho Dias designed with his own hand, as well as his purchase notes and even annotations used in different contexts, such as in the courses he taught as a university professor—all, however, always kept separate from the printed pages, a testament to his deep respect for the history of each printed volume he acquired and preserved with the utmost care.
