ANNO Leilões - Ana Hatherly (1929–2015) occupies a singular place in Portuguese culture over the past half-century: experimental poet, essayist, filmmaker, visual artist and calligrapher, she was also the tireless scholar who critically rehabilitated the Portuguese Baroque in works such as "A Experiência do Prodígio" (1983) [Lot 60] and "A Casa das Musas" (1995). Co-founder, alongside Herberto Helder, António Ramos Rosa, E. M. de Melo e Castro, Salette Tavares, António Barahona da Fonseca and António Aragão, of Portuguese Experimental Poetry, she brought together, in a single decisive gesture, the Baroque and the avant-garde as two moments of an identical combinatory vertigo. What distinguishes her vast body of work, refined to the utmost like a 18th century altarpiece, is the refusal of any separation between erudition and invention: the "Tisanas", extended over nearly half a century, the maps of imagination and memory, the experimental films and the essays on eighteenth-century nuns' letters form a single intellectual architecture. Hatherly inaugurated in Portugal a way of thinking about language as visible and palpable matter, and the past as an inexhaustible reserve of contemporaneity. All of this with a discreet elegance whose density still resists being fully measured — and which algorithms and neural networks will in all likelihood never attain.
